    Water Observation and Information System for Balkan Countries

The general concern of BALWOIS Project - Balkan Water Observation and Information System for Balkan countries - is to create in Balkan a community of the main stakeholders in the field of water protection and water management ranging from scientists, private sector, experts, NGO's, to decision makers and large public.

Three main actions are carried out in BALWOIS project:

(i) the creation of a network of scientists and stakeholders working in water related fields,
(ii) the implementation of a Water observation and information system, and
(iii) the organization of working groups, workshops, scientific visits, training courses and significant scientific events.

BALWOIS network is presently composed of around 800 researchers and experts, the information system available trought this web site give access to more 850 papers (BALWOIS conferences) and other various reports.

BALWOIS Project organises every 2 years an international scientific conference in Ohrid (Republic of Macedonia). Until now, 3 conferences have been organized : in 2004, 2006 and 250 researchers and experts attended the last one on 27-31 May 2008.

The fourth edition "BALWOIS 2010" will be held in Ohrid, on 25-29 May 2010.

"IAHS encourages and supports BALWOIS Project as its objectives are is to study the hydrological cycle on the Earth and the waters of the continents, to study erosion and sedimentation and their relation to the hydrological cycle, to examine the hydrological aspects of the use and management of water resources and their change under the influence of man's activities and to provide a firm scientific basis for the optimal utilization of water resources systems.

The third international scientific conference BALWOIS 2008 was held under the patronage of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning of Republic of Macedonia and French Embassador in Skopje. BALWOIS 2008 is organized by Balkan Institute for Water and Environment IB2E, Macedonian Association of Meteorology METEO-MAK, Hydrobiological Institute of Ohrid, Faculty of Civil Engineering (University Sts. Cyril and Methodius - Skopje), University "St. Kliment Ohridski" - Bitola, Hydrometeorological Service of Republic of Macedonia and Remote Sensing Application Centre (ReSAC, Bulgaria). BALWOIS 2008 is supported by Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development and Planning of France, International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) and various private companies.

Michel Girod

Michel Girod in Ohrid in May 2006
We are greatly saddened to let you know that Professor Michel Girod, University of Montpellier - France, passed away after a long desease on August the 16th. Michel Girod was Vice Deputy of the scientific committee of BALWOIS 2006 and BALWOIS 2008 conferences and of IB2E Association.
 
 
Everybody appreciated the permament availability and kindness of Michel. Few weeks ago he told me again how he appreciated his stay in Ohrid in May 2006 and especially the kindness of his macedonian friends :
We are loosing our friend.
